Do you know of any company which rents out or sells formal dresses / ballgowns on the Internet?

If not why not try this site http://www.promdress.co.uk/dresses/dress. - it may have some shops you don't know about; I would look at some of the sites and call the shop anyway if I saw a dress I liked. Ask them to mail it for you- you'd probably have to pay the postage; and it probably wouldn't be that cheap but it's an option. I'm sure if you offered to pay with your card on the telephone and to cover costs they'd go for it- what difference does it make to them? They'd probably ask for a deposit ( which they probably do anyway!)
http://www.onenightstand.co.uk/.
That is an online store for women's formalwear hire.
Try contacting the closest bridal/formalwear store in your local directory and asking if they could deliver something in your size, although that may be a costly exercise (and you might get something that doesn't fit)
Have you asked friends and family who are the same size whether they have any formalwear you can borrow?
