Why does my hair turn red whatever colour I dye it?!?
Hi, I must admit that I'm going pretty grey, so I've been colouring my hair for a while. I tend to find that whatever colour I choose, be it black, natural brown, etc etc, it follows this pattern:
1) initially goes to the described shade
2) turns jet black over the next 24 hours
3) fades to sandy reddy grey mess in a month or so
My natural colour ( apart from the grey ) is mid to dark brown, but there are definite red undertones in there too, especially when I've been in the sun, when the ends can go almost blonde.

Because you are a ginger headed freako
Weird. Try Herbal essence. It is really wonderful. Also, if it goes red, try herbal essence with some ash in it.
Good luck.
I have the very same problem!!!! and tha is my natural hair color also.so I will be interested to see the answers...
it sounds like your hair has been dyed WAY too many times. the natural fibre in your hair is breaking and can't hold color anymore. the ammonia is making the hair weak and unhealthy.
try deep conditioning from neutrogena
I think it might be because of the dye reacting with the grey. It does that on my Memaws hair so she just dyes it red.
Your hair is over processed incorrectly plus you may be on medications that can indeed affect your color process. Your only resolution, is to see a professional colorist and let them check it out. The stuff that is sold to salons is different from the stuff on your cosmetics store shelf. In addition, they know how to exactly prepare the correct mix of color and developer.
Best to go lighter rather than darker.
Get some blond highlights, you'll be surprised how good it will look. As your hair looses colour, so does your skin tone, so blond is good.
I am a natural dirty blonde! I was born with golden hair and then it started to get darker. One day when was 17, I decided to "strip it" . I put the colour in and I looked like Bozo. I had to go into a store and get another colour to cover it up. The woman at the counter yelled at me like a mother would and she chose sable brown for me. I put it in and it made my hair black and as the days went on it changed to a greenish tinge and of course the roots were looking much lighter. I was such a mess. Plus it was patchy in places so I understand what you are going thru. I went to 2 different salons and they wouldn't touch my hair being afraid it would fall out. Finally I found a salon that wood if I signed a paper not holding them responsible. I was there all day long. They told me that when I had originally stripped it, I didn't strip it enough. I was there all day. Finally when they put the colour in it hurt so bad I cried. This is gross but they burnt me so bad my entire head scabbed over. It was terrible, but they fixed me up. That was many years ago and I have been going to a regular salon a couple of times a year to have my hair highlighted. I am pleased with the results. It is down to my waist and it feels very natural to the touch vs. cotton. Sometimes it pays to hire someone. Besides, I am sure you deserve the pampering. Treat yourself and go to a professional and come out beautiful and feeling great.
Its because your natural pigment in your hair had red in ! anyone with red hair evan just a little will not take the coiour, ok
ok, let me try to explain this to you easy. When your hair is on the dark side (besides the gray) it will pull red(long story) Try using a temperary color. Just because it says temporary doesn't mean it is going to wash out. Trust me. It does have a hard time covering gray. Leave it on longer. By the way, temporary color does not harm the hair. Also use an ash or cool color. This neutralizes the red.
dye it blue
if you are using a home dye kit - then dont. these are no good. u should go to a professional hair salon who will be able to help with this
A hairdresser once told me that red is the base for quite a few hair colours including blonde - that's probably what's happening.
