Got dreadlocks?

How did you start them? How do you maintain them? And how long did it take till they started to look great?

Answers:
im in the process of getting dreads right now ( 3 months, 3 weeks tomorrow ). my friend who has dreads told me that wax is ABSOLUTLY NOT the way to go. it holds your hair together and doesnt allow it to move around and form the knots.

you CAN wash your hair, maybe two or three times a week, with a particle free shampoo. the girl at the health food store who has dreads told me to use Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps. i like it. you can use it as shampoo and soap. you can swim, too, but dry your hair REALLY WELL or else your knots might get a bit moldy.

you should mess with your hair a lot, but obviously dont run oyur fingers thru it. twist it and knot it up a lot. try not to sleep on your back or put your hair in a tight ponytail or hat because that also flattens them out.

when my knots were about 2 months-2 1/2 months old, one of the African American teachers at my school asked me if i was trying to lock my hair and i was like YES =)

well, it takes a lot of patience to do this. A LOT of patience, and you will have to walk around with major knots in your hair.

*one little thing, i hear that dreadheads tend to get lice more frequently than people who dont lock their hair, so the most effective thing i have heard of is obviously NOT lice/dandruff shampoo becuase of the conditioner, but i heard you should wash your hair with vinager. i havent tried it, becuase i havent gotten lice, but just to let you know

so good luck and have fun!!

oh, ONE more thing: about the guy who said that white girls dont look good with dreads.. F THAT. REPRESENT.

dreadlocks on white women are very unattractive. Why dont u get highlights or something.
I just can't look at them, I keep thinking there must be "visitors" in there. How do they keep this clean.
Unfortunatley no one has ever been able to have dreadlocks long enough for them to start to look great, they only ever get to the stage where they look like somthing flea infested has died on your head and got stuck in your hair. The human life span is not long enough for dreads to become great
yes i have megga dreads!! started by twisting each section of hair until whole head covered in little twists, do not wash hair so you get all the natural oils in it, then keep twisting everyday. you will find you cant help twisting them after a while anyway. you may have to get help in sectioning hair to start with. keep on going unil they grow longer and just always rince with water, when they are fully formed you can wash with a mild shampoo. i think you can actually get a hairdresser to help you get started. i had a hippy mate you started mine. always make sure you keep them seperated so they do not form one big clump. i have blonde fine hair and mine worked well. good luck !!
no mon
I am from Jamaica and I had locks about a year and half ago if you want to do it try to find an african american hairstylist that specialize in interlocking, or sister locks and that might hold your hair better, as i am assuming ur caucasian, you have to get some lock holding agent to keep it together and you more than likely have to groom it very often, dont wash it too often either use alchohol to clean the roots..You need to excersise some patience thoughit will take some time
