Is it worth buying a sapphire ring two sizes too small in the hope that I can have it resized satisfactorily?

Assuming that you can't get the ring in your size, like off of eBay or something, then it would depend on the style of the ring.
If the band is plain fine metal (gold, silver, platinum) then it wouldn't be a problem. If there is engraving, stones set in the band, or it's a plated ring, then a jeweler would have a hard time sizing it. Many of them wouldn't even chance it.
A good jeweler can resize a ring up to just about any size you need it. If there isn't enough gold or whatever to stretch, then they can add the metal in it to give more size. 2 sizes is not that much of a change to go up or down with a ring.
Why not just buy the right size to start with? Although I have heard that it is easier to make a ring small than it is to make it bigger, so if you must resize it try to go down in size.

It isn't very expensive to have a ring resized.. but it depends on the style of the ring. It is very difficult to resize a chanel set ring because the setting that holds the stone has a tension element to it. If you are looking at a ring with a crown setting, you can get it sized very easily for a minimal cost. So, if the ring is a great deal and set in a crown. I say. Go For It!

Well, like the other answers, why would you want to do that? Get it the right size to start with. However, if you have come across a bargain or something which is too small, then it only costs £15 maximum to get one resized.
No it is not. Puttiing cost aside, rings with stones when resized shift and can spoil the original design.

I would ask your local jeweller if it possible to stretch the band two sizes. It depends on how thick the band is to start with.
