Dye it brown. don't bleach it, it will go orange.

Go to the hairdresser! NEVER think you can handle bleach yourself. You're an amateur, whose never had a days professional experience in your life, and you should drop the peroxide bottle and head for your nearest salon. ESPECIALLY considering your hair is black. The amount of horror stories I hear every day of people and their tragic peroxide home-jobs have become all too much.
I don't suggest any bleach for your hair. Not only will it damage the hair but it will turn if not taken proper care of. If you want to strip the color, you can try a color removal kit from a drugstore, though they will not completely remove all the pigment since the hair color is so dark and black is hard to remove. You can then use another dye to achieve the desired look. You would probably be better off getting a stylist's consultation (at a hair school; regular salon's are sometimes pricey) This process will damage your hair, so keep it minimal and take a break in between your color stripping and your color change. Use plenty of moisturizer to help the hair before a second processing. Good Luck and be careful. You might want to have someone there to visually assit you when you do any of these things.
Best to go to a professional. Black is notoriously hard to shift and you could come out with the spongey, moisture-starved looked - slimey when wet and dry as straw, not to mention flyaway when dry. You could go to Sally's Beauty Supply near Carnaby Street and ask but it is risky. If you're only trying to lift a couple of shades, then deposit a dark colour, be careful because the hair will be dry and the cuticle open which will put it at risk of "grabbing" the new colour thus possibly creating black in the end anyway. The light brown will be orange and flourescent, flaming orange at that immediately after stripping (bleaching) until you deposit a toner or colour over it.

First i would use a color remover or a soap cap..and then see you results and then go from there..this is going to be a process dont think that its going to be a one shot deal and your done..your mid-shaft to ends should be done first with and off the scalp lightener and then when the desired color is achived go it with a on-scalp lightner on the roots and regrowth..monitor and when deisered shade is achived you will need to tone the entire head to get a even uniform color..this will be damaging to your hair.I would reccomend you go to a salon.
dont put a brown on as this will do nothing to the black at all. in our salon we use a bleach bath or a mild stripper. it lifts to an ugly orangy brown but then we colour over this with the shade you want, it might fade up after a few weeks so you might need another application after that but that would be all then, please dont do it yourself i see so many horror stories coming in the shop with disasters with colour stripping xxx
