Why do most girls feel like they have to act catty or size each other up on the street or on the bus ?

I think its bcoz they lack a sense of being - they constantly try to get external validation and they get this by putting other girls down so that they feel good about being better than the others. They need to love themselves first - and please if the other chic jus looks damn fine, don't take it out on her!!
Becasue they're in competition for boys and it helps to demoralise the opposition.
Not all the girls are catty.
Because they are still girls and have not grown in to women yet.
Because they are so insecure about themselves that they have to belittle others to feel big.

I am glad someone has asked! I don't know either. I always try and smile at people when I see them, and it's awful when you do this and what you get in return (and it's almost always girls I'll add) is a snarl and a look up and down. I hate it, I don't want to fight with these people, I was just trying to be nice. I wish they'd stop being so bloody insecure!
A lot of women are insecure. That is the only reason.
I'm not sure why, but girls do have a lot of competition. (so they think) I really don't think they have to compete. If I like a girl I don't compare her to others.

these girls are usually very insecure with themselves and are probably just checking you out coz you look really good when your out so you make them feel even more insecure with themselves
Because they are young and immature. That's the only explanation.
Becasue they are dum bunnies.. and do't realize they are doing more harm than good.. they are trying to elevate themselves in their social circle.. the only way they see to do that is to bring someone else down.. shows poor character and a low self worth.

I have never noticed this! If i look at other girls its only to think i wish i had a waist, legs, face like that. It's never occured to me to be catty or that others might be being catty.
In my opinion those girls who "size" up other girls know they lack one thing: confidance. When I was in cosmo school, the girls would ALWAYS look at me. My classmates would point that out. You know what though? I never saw them cause I didn't even bother to look at them. I got what I need from my self, I don't need someone else's judgement.
