Why do women have random dress sizes?
mens sizes are done in measurements, 32" waist, 48" chest etc, so why are womens sizes 8, 10, 12 etc. what does this equate to? also if all shops sizes vary and half the women out there aren't waring the right bra size wouldn't it just be simpler to use normal measurements too?

28 = 10
30 = 12
32 = 14
34 = 16 so on so on its not hard and most women dont but you try find a 32 g bra coz im tellin ya. ya will be looking for a long time

Ah, see, to a woman, the higher the number, the worse the size is! If women who were small knew they wore a size 26 (for 26" waist), they'd still feel big!

If only it were that simple!! I would love a nice easy way of buying clothes. In one shop I am a 12, in another a 10. I hate trying things on, but I can't risk buying stuff that might not fit.

Every woman has sizes in their closet that covers three sizes..
For example, Mine are 2, 4 and 6. Depends on how much water I am retaining.

marketing . some women will try and get into a smaller size so they can claim to be only a 10 . well if some manufacturers / stores make their 10 generous it will sell better than marked as a 12.
I'm really not sure why women's sizes are in numbers while men sizes are measurements. however some places (ie express) sell jeans, etc in measurements. Also different brands vary in their sizing for example a size 6 is sometimes more like a size 11 in another brand. I wish all the sizes & measurements would run true.

thats a good question but the real answer is it depends on the type of material thats why girls have different sizes. I normally wear a 9 but today i have a 5 on its because the type of material thats what i think
Its best for a woman to get her measurements of her bra size correct, if not there would be allot of pain. and in diff countries there are diff sizes for bras and dress. like a six in America would be an 8 or ten in UK and Ireland. and some brands claim they have a size ten right when in fact sometimes it ain't, it would turn out to be a 12 or at times an 8. depends on who makes. so no matter what size you in fact are, always try them on before you buy.
Aside from some of the other answers - water retention, weight changes, making women feel better about their bodies with numbers - which is true.and guys have this need to feel "good" with numbers, too.just not when it comes to clothes (think 6 inches) - all this has to do with changing hormones which are different in women because of what they need to become mothers. But another reason is because you can't measure a woman's body the same as a man's - we have more curves. The curvier, the more difficult to find clothes that are designed for one specific size. Women's clothes are designed differently because women have different shaped bodies, and they differ in the brands again because of the way the company compensates for women's curves (or lack there of in some cases).
I wish they did use real measurements- but then, I sew, so I know my bust/waist/hip/height from memory. All clothes have "wearing ease", which means that there's enough room that you can bend your elbows, sit down, etc., but some have more "design ease" than others (relaxed fit vs. slim fit). Just get the "relaxed fit" ones for the bloatier days.. changing size monthly has nothing to do with the number on the tag, and everything to do with how much design ease the clothes have.
I don't get what this people are saying about having 3 different sizes in their wardrobe because of their period. I have one size, and that is a size 8 (UK). The reason for it is I have no idea, I've always wondered why men's clothes have simply been labelled Small, Medium, Large, or Extra Large. Maybe it's something to do with women having curvy bodies.
The measuremnets given above are correct.although I must say shop sizes are different too, I am a 12 in certain shops and a 14 in others.so needless to say i buy more clothes from the shops where i am a size 12 and if there was a shop where i could be an 8 i certainly would!
