1. digging

Do you mean the diy sort of the sort you find on the end of your toes and fingers? Always worth sorting that out before you start your biology homework.
The nails protect the ends of thefingers - to stop them from fraying. They are also there to be painted in the latest blingin fashions and to show off to your mates. They can also be chewed on anxiously as you wait to hear whether that boy in the other class fancies you :)
1-3 are for finger nails, 4-6 are for construction nails, you didn't say which type of nails.
1. To paint
2. To bite
3. To scratch
4. To hammer things in place
5. To poke holes in tires
6. To get rusty, then step on and have to get a tetnes shot
protection is only one I can think of
Holding up pictures, securing shelves, picking your nose, making a screeching noise on a blackboard, holding a wobby floorboard in place and it is really thick unscrewing a small screw.
1. To scratch an itch
2. To chew on when you're nervous
3. To tickle small children and make them giggle like mad
4. To scratch the eyes out of the b***h who's hitting on your man
5. To pick your nose
6. To scratch across a blackboard and annoy everyone within hearing.
1, to scratch a really itchy foot/back/arm
2, to be able to get those hard to reach boggies up you nose
3, to use as a temporary tooth pick just after eating fruit gums
4, to paint and make look nice
5, to be able to peal a sticker off when you put it in the wrong place
6, to make cool tapping noises when bored
but those boring scientists will probably say something along these lines:

1. Look nice when taken care of
2. Protects your finger tips
3. Scratch
4. Kill
