Brittle Splitting Nails

Keywords: brittle splitting nails, fingernails breaking, onychoscheizia, soft thin nails

Onychoschizia or splitting of the fingernails is a common problem seen by dermatologists. The term onychoschizia includes splitting, brittle, soft or thin nails. Onychoschizia is more common in women.

Only very rarely are internal disease or vitamin deficiencies the reason (iron deficiency is the most common). One tip is that if the fingernails split, but the toenails are strong, then an external factor is the cause. Basically brittle nails can be divided into dry and brittle (too little moisture) and soft and brittle (often too much moisture).

The usual cause is repeated wetting and drying of the fingernails. This makes them dry and brittle. This is often worse in low humidity and in the winter (dry heat). The best treatment is to apply lotions containing alpha-hydroxy acids or lanolin containing lotions such as "Elon" (by the "Dartmouth" company) to the nails after soaking nails in water for 5 minutes and after getting the hands wet.
you are lacking something in your diet

I'm the opposite. My nails are anightmare to cut. This is because I have a calcium-rich diet. It's great for your bones too and it can even be like the milk you have in a milkshake or something like that, as long as you get 3 portions a day.
If your nails are "breaking" its probably because they have too much protein in them and not enough moisture. The protein makes them hard so they snap, the moisture gives them flexibility. Try a product called tip top or massage your cuticles with olive oil, its very moisturising. Good luck
My fingernails kept peeling and breaking and someone told me to drink more water and I did and now they are fine. Also your diet and health have to do with it
Something is lacking in your diet. Try a multi-purpose vitamin every day. That will help with the nails and also with other things too.

If you use nail varnish, then that can make your nails go brittle.
If you file them too thin, that makes your nails week too.
If you don't do those things, then maybe they are dehydrated, so you need to use hand cream. Also, watch your diet. You have to have good protein and vitamins in your diet for strong healthy nails.
lack of calcium is the main cause, but short term, if you buy some jelly, and eat a cube every day, you definately will notice a difference in about 2 weeks.

use a nail strengthener, forms a protective barrier to allow nails to grow, some nail hardeners contain ingredients to nourish the nail and treat yourself to a manicure@if your filing your own nails dont do the sea-saw movement as that causes the nails to break@split too file from side to centre at 45 degrees helps to seal, not too deep to prevent ingrowing nails @ not into a point as that weakensand too finish hand cream @ gloves now the weathers getting a bit nippy,oh soz wear rubber gloves if u r working with chemicals,ok hope that helps u ..
