use a semi permenant color, because a permenant hair color probably won't last that long either way.color doesn't lift color, so the brown won't take it out, it will just coat it.so when it fades you might still see the red

should be okay as the dark brown will cover it all, if your not sure do a strand test to see what the overall effect is. get a good hair dye too!
i have the exact same problem good things to do are to use hair products made especially for brunettes it got rid of the ginger-ness of my hair and its natural
if its as close to ur own natural colour it should cover the red
It will look like chocolate brown, so i wouldn't worry
L'Oreal is a good make. Be careful though to pick a good shade darker or it could turn even more ginger. I'm like you, don't have much time to go to the hairdresser, but if you're having problems, it is well worth making the time, effort and expense to go and have it professionally corrected. You can then start to do it yourself again.
I would always be cautious about adding more dyes after I dyed my hair green by accident!!
If you want to add a brown I would say use a wash in one like Wella so that if it doesn't look right it will wash out. Good luck xx

it should go OK, although red is the hardest colour to get rid of because of the chemicals in it. if you check on the dye box, it will have a colour chart thing, saying 'before' and 'after' for different colours, if it says it goes over a light colours such as blond, it will go over red. anyway, good luck!
Hair colouring is trickier than you would think. Certain colours cancel out other colours, and you can research it on the internet by typing in hair colour, colour wheel. A colour with a bluey base is supposed to cancel out reddish tones, but don't take my word for it, research it yourself - or if your lucky, maybe a hairdresser will share some insight.

ok let me put it this way when u dye ur hair red it's pretty much for life unless u stip ur hair colour i am still living with the re-ginerish that comes along with trying to piss off my parents if u put a brown over it it's more likely to go purple cuz that happened 2 me but hey mb u'll have more luck than i did if all else fails u could just dye it black or even strip the hair colour and dye it back naturally (thats what my parents want to do to me.i'm gonna hate being blonde again)
The best dye by far is a natural dye called henna availible from Lush..you mix it with boiling water, its natural and by far the best..(I should know i've been every colour under the planet!) Its available in red, brown and black.
If you use chocolate brown it should cover it..as long as its dark enough..you might notice that after a few weeks the brown has faded where the ginger was so you will have to keep doing it..which is why i reccomend henna as it won't harm your hair.
