I am going to a ball on Friday - dinner and dance with work and it is a black tie event.?
What type of tux should I buy? Should I get a tux or something different? Can anyone send me post some links to pics of what I should wear and colour etc

Since it's for work, keep it traditional and simple-black tux, white shirt, black tie, black dress shoes. The exact style and cut depends on what will look best on you. This is a great site for matching the style to your body.

The easiest look to do is a single breasted, notch or peak collar, 2 or 3 button, wool or wool-blend jacket. Stay away from polyester, it looks cheap. The jacket should hit at your hip or top of your thigh, nothing too long or too short. Then the pants should be flat front, no pleats, and basic, nothing more than a side stripe if that much. Just your regular tuxedo. Save the trendy styles and fashion colors for non-work events. This is just an example, and you will probably want to rent one anyway for this one time event.

Dinner dances = drunken behaviour. Hire a cheap one, and if you wreck it, who cares?
hire a kilt, it's really comfortable to wear and you can take off the jacket and just wear the waistcoat when dancing. it definately get people talking if you wear one and you're not scottish!
Just go to a tux rental place near you and they will set you up. That's what everybody does that doesn't have a tux. Rent a few before you buy they are usually only $50.00 to rent. You will spent at least $400.00 to buy, and you may decide you hate the style after a while.
I used to have to attend "black tie" functions, but not regularly enough to make buying a dinner suit a viable option. I hired them at first, they never fit right, smell funny, itch, etc. Finally, I bought a plain black 2-piece suit - useful for job interviews and funerals throughout the rest of the year - which would pass for a dinner suit at a distance. Add a plain white shirt with double cuffs - again useful for the job interviews and funerals. The only item left which cannot really be worn elsewhere is the black bow tie.

listen, if the invite states "black tie" then that means only ONE thing for a man. Tux. rent one, because to get a decent one you are looking at €800 -€1000. Thats just for a gieves & hawkes off the rack. Best advice is to rent it, but not off the high street crap places. they are for debs only!! you need to find a proer suit rental place and pay about €100 -€150 to rent it. But thats just me. Lots of people dont have a problem wearing cheap tux's.

If you imagine that you will be invited to similar events in the next few years i would definitely invest in a tux - they neednt be to expensive (my boyfriend got his from Moss Bros for £150) and you will quickly get your moneys worth if you wear it once or twice a year as it costs about £50 to rent. If you do decide to buy one, the cheapest places will be in university towns where they often do special deals for students, particularly at the beginning of the academic year. Whatever you do, wear the traditional suit or tux - colours and 'interesting' accessories generally just look tacky.
