How do I break in new shoes without damaging me or the shoes??

I have a fabulous pair of green leather shoes. However, they are brand new and I can't walk in them without the leather cutting at my ankles. any ideas how to soften them up without damaging them??

Answers:
Buy a shoe stretcher, kleeneze and bettaware will have them. You could soak some news paper in soapy water and leave it in the heel of your shoes overnight. Or buy some extra comfy expensive plasters to protect your heels. BTW I only EVER wear synthetics but I get this with patent - a lot!
with a sledge hammer
Pee in them it softens the leather. I know it sounds gross but it does work.
i always leave newspaper rolled up in them over night, pack it in tightly though
Try stretching them out a little with shoe trees.
you can use those old shoe stretchers grandpa had if you can find them.
one step at a time
HAHAHA.have someone else walk in them!
roll up some damp newspaper and shove it inside (put in a stocking if you are worried about newspaper print) and keep them in for a couple of days.
alternatively try saddle soap which softens them up. used to use it with my doc martins and it worked a treat.
Bend the edges softly? Or wear thick socks with them.
yah what you do is wear thick socks and walk in them! trust me i have 13 heels 5 sneackers and i think like 8 flip flops! I love shoes but i have the same promblem thats what i do!
u could put old newspaper in them to strech them out or you could wear them round the house with a pair of socks on just to break them in
wear them for a short time around the house every day till they mould to your feet
Lend them to a friend for a couple of days. This will give you ample time to work out why the hell you paid good money for shoes that hurt.
it may hurt but the best way is to wear them around the house for a little while each day. you may want to wear socks or put a band-aid where the shoes rub
if you go to like a walmart or target they have shoe stretchers that you put in side the shoes and it will make them softer with out ruining them.
What you can do is just hold them in your hand and bend them back and forth a couple of times, that usually softens up leather shoes. Another thing I do with leather shoes or boots is I wear like 2 pairs of thick socks around the house with the shoes on and is strecthes them a little bit. Other then that, sometimes the only thing to do is wear for short periods of time, and shortly they will become very comfortable.
my dad would say gently stretch them with your hands, wear plasters where they hurt you or some socks and keep wearing them for a short while a round the house. buy a shoe stretcher.
Sorry, but the bad news is these shoes don't fit you. If they did, the leather wouldn't cut at your ankles. Only thing I can suggest at this point is take them to a good shoemaker or shoe repair shop and see if they can alter or adapt them to fit your foot.
If the only place they are irritating you is your ankle, you might be able to put lifts in the heels (like insoles, only just for the heels) and that might raise your ankle a little bit higher and prevent the irritation. But that's really only a temporary solution. A shoemaker is really your best bet.
This is not a total solution but it might help. When you're watching telly, or anytime you're just sitting around, wear them. The warmth and body moisture helps the shoe to shape to your foot and become more flexible, without the agony of having to walk in them.
Let someone else wear them first.
Soak them in water, and then wear them until they are dry. That way when the leather dryes it will mold it self to your foot. The water will not hurt them.
put wet newspaper in them and leave them overnight
Really Bad Way Is To Get Someone Else To Wear Them For You, Make Sure They Only Wear Them Inside You Still Want Them To Look Good
Failing That Wear Them With A Pair Of Think Socks For A Few Days.
Can I suggest the following

1. Pack them with paper to stretch them, put the paper in plastic bags or you will stain the inside of your shoes and you will end up with Page 3 print all over your feet

2. Get a friend to wear them for you - around the house - even better if they have bigger feet so they can stretch them

3. Change them for a larger size

4. Use a shoe horn stretcher, you can actually buy this. honest.

5. Wait till you get older, your body shrinks the older you get
i used to work in a shoe shop that did this stretching you have to boil kettle on the inside heel of the shoe for about 3 mins get the stick of a wooden sweeping brush and keep shaping the inside heel the leather is soft from the heat and the brush shapes it round and makes the heel part supple
try rubbing arround the area (inside) with a cake of soap, we always did this years ago and it really works.
you can also use methelated spirits to soften the leather on the inside and wear them while they are still wet, they will then mould to your shape
you could try rubbing vaseline around the inside, and also putting on a thick pair of socks and wearing them in indoors.
Shoes shouldn't have to be 'broken in' - they should fit comfortably when you try them on in the store.

I have heard that some of the suggestions already offered do work, but cannot comment from personal experience.

Next time, buy stylish shoes that don't hurt your feet.
wear them around the house whilest wearing thick wooly socks, that way you stretch them a bit and you feet shouldn't get blisters or anything like that as well!
POTATOES ITS TRUE, SOMETHING IN THEM STRETCHES THE LEATHER IT WORKED ON MY SHOES
