If single mums leave a job will their benefits be cut for a period of time?
Answers:
Not as long as you have children under 16. I had to leave a job when my daughter was 8 as I was transferred to another town and found it really difficult travelling, child care etc., I called CAB to make sure I was not going to be penalised for handing in my notice and they told me not as long as the child is under 16. Luckily when she turned 11 and started secondary school I went back into full-time work as she was more independant. Do check with CAB as the rules change so often.
They say they will stop money but I have never known anyone had there money cut. I think you have to have a valid reason, i.e. childcare problems, children distressed - playing up, your depressed!!
The dole will hold your money for a period of time, which I think is something like 6 or 8 weeks, but go to the SS, who will add to your Family Allowance payments to bring you up to a liveable amount with a Supplement payment.
Not if you have a 'valid' reason for leaving - so make sure you do! They can't leave your kids with no money at all. Try Citizens Advice or your local law center if you have one near you.
Go to your local CAB (citizens advice bureau). They are manned (womened generally) by people who will give unbiased professional advice or put you in touch with an agency who will. I find them most helpful. Remember to take along all your details and paperwork.
footnote
I was a single parent for a couple of years about 6 years ago and I had a single mum benefit, and council tax paid ( I was entitled to rent reduction but did not need it) I was exempt from NHS charges at dentist and prescriptions.
Hope this is of some help even though it is not an immediate answer. Good Luck!
