I have recently run into the problem of getting a cousin into the States permanently from another country.
I've asked around at work to other who have immigrated and heard some of the most ridiculous stories you could possibly imagine.
One girl had a similar problem as yours.
Her legally married husband was already an American citizen and gainfully employed in a decent paying medical profession.
But it was still not enough to get her here.
She and her family were privately informed to get all of her PARENTS property, i.e., their automobiles and bank accounts transferred into HER name alone.
When the records were checked.not delved into, just checked.she was admitted immediately.
They only wanted to prove she was not destitute and become a welfare recipient.
She assured me that after the proof of income in the bank accounts and two cars, it was never mentioned again. And the money was NOT substantial. Her mother was a secretary and her father a machinist.
Afterwards they just transferred everything right back into her parents name as before.
It took three months.
She, of course, immediately became a naturalized Citizen upon her arrival to the States to forego any future problems.
She's been here for 6 years with no problems whatsoever.
She even found employment immediately. at a 7-11 down there street from me ran by a Filipino woman.neither really spoke English. LOL
Best of luck to you friend!

I think it would largely depend on how much you earn, how much savings you have and whether or not the skill you possess will be deemed to be useful in the USA.
