Trouble at work..extended probation?
I work for a big media company, today I had my 6 month probation review type thing which you either pass, they extend or they tell you sorry we wont keep you.
I was nervous about this meeting but was assured by everyone that I would pass with flying colours.
The only problem is i didn't and my probation is extended by another 3 months!
In this time I have objectives to complete.
But despite this I cant quite see why the bosses did this, they told me specifically my work is excellent and my relationship with clients and staff is brilliant- and "everyone loves me to bits"
I dont quite understand the extension- and im really gutted, and the objects are work I already do.
There are usually 2 staff in my area but I have been left on my own with a massive work load and loads of pressure but despite that I hit my targets. Things like this alway happen to me and I'd like to think Im just a normal person who gets on with my work!
What do you think? Is there anything I can do?

* What were your objectives during your probation period - and were you achieving them ?
* Were you having any interim appraisals with your line manager during the period?
* What is your company policy regarding extension of probation ? - is there any rights of appeal ?
* Has your line management put the details of your extension in writing with their reasons?

Well one possibility is that they want to keep the pressure up because they need the work you are doing. Alternatively, they're not sure your post will be funded in the new year so they are keeping their options open. Either way, it sucks.
Have you tried asking them, if everything is so rosy, why probation got extended?

No, you can't do anything about it, I'm afraid.
Just sit tight, keeping improving and doing a good job, I'm sure you'll be offered a permanent contract soon.

remember as an employee you are valuable otherwise security would have been at your desk with a box to show you they way out. you have every right to ask your emplyer what specifically you need to work on so that way on your next review its cut and dry.
remember unless they are paying you above what you are worth there are always greener pastures. don't let them bully you to get more out of you than what you are being paid.

As a manager myself, my advise would ask them for a job chat meeting, then go through with them how you feel and also ask them to put it in writing why you have had your probation exteneded they should have had job chats thoughtout your 6 mths if they were not happy. You can appeal to their decsion, but my gut guess is that they are probably using you. I know this souds bad, but you have probably done nothing wrong, and if you are the only one there working in the dept, they are probably planning a re-structure and have can not decide what to do. so if they do re-structure then they can change what ever you do or decided to let you go

Are there benefits to you if you are given a contract that will cost them more money, if so this could be a reason.
Also if you were given a contract, they may think that you will not do as much work, its not fair, but I have experienced employees that do this, as soon as the probationary period is up, and they have a contract, work slips and they do not put as much effort in to their work, I'm not saying you would do this, but there are people out there that do.
I would approach them and ask, to be given the exact reasons for the extended probationary period, its only fair that they do this, also look round for another job.
Well, the fact that they have extended the probation rather than terminating, means that they cannot be that unhappy with your work. You say you are doing the work of 2 people, maybe the extension is to decide whether the role is for one very good person (i.e. you), or does in fact require more than one person. Don't feel sad, carry on doing your best and you may find that you are worrying over nothing. Good Luck. :)
Maybe they are testing you with more work to see how you work under pressure.
DO IT WELL. Don't complain. Get on with it. When the time comes, they will (hopefully) recognize your contributions. Look for another job during your free time, if you wish.
I don't think you are being paid what you are worth..I would be working as you are with a weather-eye to new opportunities - as in working for yourself. Obviously you have skills the market needs.
