My mate works in a Diamond specialists. They grade, buy and sell diamonds. He started out just getting a job in good quality jewellers. He learnt from the other guys and worked in progressively more specialist shops. About three in total I think.

He is just about to complete his diamond grading course in London (where he was just offered a job on £40,000 a year, not bad for a 24 year old).
