How safe is to give credit card details over phone.?

When I entered the credit card details in teh website ( Veri sign logo is there), it said the verification number entered is not correct. But i I had entered the correct number only. ABout this when I contacted that company, they asked me to call them and they will take the order via telephone. I want to know how safe is this and also in case if anybody takes my card number and purchase any thing, we can locate them by knowing their IP address of the PC. Kindly guide me

Now that everyone has scared you to death. You may relatively safely order over the phone--AS LONG AS YOU CALLED THEM AND INITIATED THE CONTACT! Then you know that it is the company that you are calling, NEVER give out that kind of info to someone who calls you.
about as safe as bungee jumping with no cord!

nah i suppose it depends who the company is and whether they are trustworthy
ok here is a safety tip .have one card that you use on the internet and only transfere in what you are spending ..keep your limits minimal and that way no matter what happens no way will you be scarred of being done for thousands .its common sense really ..if it not there to take they cant take it
my mom said no, because you dont really know who actually calls and that someone could be tapping your fone. i hope this helps
I work in a travel agency and we do telephone bookings all the time. I suppose it is open to corruption - if the company in question is reputable, you just have to trust them. If you've never heard of them, I would beware. It's amazing that we now have chip and pin for face-to-face customers, but anybody can give (and take) a credit card over the phone. It's a minefield.
A credit card is a great financial tool. It can be more convenient to use and carry than cash, and it offers valuable consumer protections under federal law. At the same time, it's a big responsibility. If you don't use it carefully, you may owe more than you can repay, damage your credit rating and create credit problems for yourself that can be difficult to fix.

Chances are your mail is full of offers from credit card issuers. How do you know if the time is right for a credit card? Here is some important information that may help you determine whether you're ready for plastic, what to look for when you select a company to do business with, and how to use your credit card responsibly
Keep your account information to yourself. Never give out your credit card number or expiration date over the phone unless you know who you're dealing with. A criminal can use this information to steal money from you, or even assume your credit identity.
You're Responsible

While a credit card makes it easy to buy something now and pay for it later, you can lose track of how much you've spent by the time the bill arrives if you're not careful. And if you don't pay your bill in full, you'll probably have to pay finance charges on the unpaid balance. What's more, if you continue to charge while carrying an outstanding balance, your debt can snowball. Before you know it, your minimum payment is only covering the interest. If you start having trouble repaying the debt, you could tarnish your credit report. And that can have a sizable impact on your life. A negative report can make it more difficult to finance a car or home, get insurance, and even get a job.
Don't use a cordless phone either, apparently some how or other fraudsters can tap into conversations, don't know how, but my Mum read it in the paper. Its better to be safe than sorry.
Well, I don't have a credit card but my b/f does and he is extra careful with his. My advice to you is no, do not give your information over the phone. You can't trust people dealing with credit over the phone. That's a "NO-NO"! God forbids. Don't do it. If you do, before you even start giving out information, ask them how long have they been in the credit card business and ask them how they feel about identity theft and would they do it. If they positively tell you that they wouldn't get involved in identity theft, then go for it. You gotta trust your instincts.
