Should you declare when claiming tax and child credits as a couple?
That your partner is working one day a week for diffarant amounts of money, and gets paid cash in hand so no tax is payed by them and they do not claim themseleves for income support. is there a limit you can earn before you have to declare it?
Answers:
If you are filing jointly, all income must be included since it is combined for tax purposes. If the IRS finds out there are cash payments that are unreported, you could be fined for underpayment of taxes.
if it is cash I would not, she is not getting taxed on it so then you will have to pay tax on it at the end of the year which is why some people end up with a - instead of a +. Especially if it is a smalll amount like 20 once a week
what country are you from
There is a limit one can earn -used to be £4- so best to 'phone IRS and get the answer straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak.
I would, just in case, save getting in trouble for it later on if its not allowed
I would just check out how much your partner is earning on average. there is a minimum limit for per week you can earn before tax and ni. think about £90 a week. dont forget the personal tax free allowance each year, for 06/07 (6th april 2006 to 5th april 2007) it is £5035 before any tax is stopped.
if the earnings are under this, then there is nothing to worry about.
did your partner receive a tax code relating to that employer? does the employer have them on the books and being employed by them? if it all comes to ahead and the IR find out, then best thing to do is assume that the employer notified the IR of there employment and its is the employers fault.
