I got sicknote from doc 2day, but I have been off work for 3 days and didn't tell them. Can I be sacked?

I'm been going through a rough time both at home and at work. My boss told me a few weeks ago that he thought I was going downhill and to sort myself out. I told him I needed time off but he refused.
I had a bit of a breakdown, and stayed in bed for 5 days non-stop, should have been in work for 3 of them.
Went to doc today. I was diagnosed with severe depression (tell me something I don't know!) and she gave me sick-note for two weeks, some tablets and an appointment with a counsellor.

Can I be expected to get the sack because I didn't phone in, or must my boss honour the sicknote and the fact that I am ill?

Answers:
Your boss can sack you. But it will be most unlikely seeing that you have a valid medical certificate. I suggest you grab the bull by the horns and speak to your boss as a matter of urgency. You may get a verbal or indeed written warning because of your period that was an unauthorised absense and lose your pay for this period. You need to be honest with your boss and be be prepared to give an explanation. Just by the nature of your illness and your valid medical certificate your boss should be sympathetic.
Your boss can always sack you, its just that you can have the right of appeal, and have the decision overturned. In the VAST majority of cases, the settlement is out of court.

But that is worst case scenario - I'd suggest that you call your boss again, arrange a meeting with them and talk through the aspects that have meant you didnt call in.

Good luck!
You need to call in to your boss and your HR department or you will be fired. You cannot just not show up to work and expect to keep your job. Your boss may already think that you have quit at this point.

If you get that sick note to your HR department and make sure they understand that you are under a doctor's care than you will be alright. You need to do that this morning.

Take care,
Troy
Not knowing where you come from makes this difficult to answer. In Australia, new laws have come in where you would be able to be sacked in this instance. Not letting your boss know before hand that you wouldn't be coming in is rude to say the least. I wouldn't dream of just not turning up to work, without a phone call or anything, depressed or not.
your boss has to honour the sick note from day issued, as regards not informing them that you were on sick leave, depends if you have a written contract or some employee handbook, stating that you must contact whoever as soon as you know you are not going to attend work on the first day you fall ill. he can't sack you but could issue a verbal or written warning, if he is a good caring employer he won't, if he does, find another job, life's too short to work for a pratt like that!
You need to send in sick note and letter explaining why you did not phone but are allowed to self certify for the first 7 days you are sick so you should not get the sack contact the disability rights council if you have any trouble as if you are diagnosed with depression you are covered by them (I know this from family experience). good luck hope you feel OK soon
In the UK you are allowed to be off for one week before you need to produce a doctors sicknote.
However as you didn't phone in this can qualify as gross misconduct so would depend on your boss and your contract. If you are a temp they can fire you on spot if they wish however if you are employed by the company it is a different story and they may just chose not to pay you.
Check your contract and also check with your HR department
