if they cant offer an insurance backed guarantee then they are not members of FENSA why would you take the risk? I do conservatories and it never ceases to amaze me in this day and age with all the consumer programmes on tv that people still take such a big gamble purely to save a few quid in the short term. What will you do in a few years time if it starts to leak and the company is no longer around?
Write into the Insolvency agency listing yourself as one of there creditors
If you pay this deposit with your credit card I think that you will find that the bank card conditions will protect you if the company folds up before you recieve the goods. usually anything over £100. is covered by your card insurance. It would be better for you to ask the bank if these terms apply to your credit card.
Don't pay any deposit especially that much tell them you will pay a deposit when they deliver and final payment when you are satisfied. There is plenty of company's that will do it without a deposit also if you pay a deposit pay by credit card it will be protected by your cc company
