Supervisors job?

my work collegue and myself have worked for the same company for the last 14yrs.
We have trained in arboriculture together and have both reached the same grade in a level 2 diploma. We are good friends out of work as well and he was also my best man at my wedding.
This job has come up at work for an arboriculture tree officer, our manager has said to us we have both got to apply for the job. We have always said we would never compete against each other, we have also got our own tree surgery company and are both equals in our level of responsibility, both at work and our own company. I dont want to jepordise our working relationship or friendship, What can I do??

You have to be the bigger man and be a man of your word. You said yourself that you both agreed to not compete against each other.I am a christian and I believe if you will do the right thing God will reward you for that.He may get this job but you may get a better offer later on.
it's not up to you or him as to who gets the job or not. if you want it, then apply. better money more flexibility etc. Im' sure he will apply as well. depending on who gets the job, I think you guys are good enough friends that whoever gets the job will be congratulated by the other with no bad feelings. if you're still in a pickle about the whole thing than ask your friend if he is applying for the job too. simply bcuz he's your friend doesn't mean that you both have to be equals forever. if you don't care about the job or even him getting it than don't apply. but if you guys are good enough friends than it shouldn't matter who gets it and who doesn't.
your manager cant force you to do anything. If you don't want to apply for the job then don't. It's up to you. Don't let him bully you into doing something you don't want to, there are laws against that.
Have you tried talking about it with him? And how badly do you want this other job?
Guess you could always make it a bit of a friendly competition over who gets it, and say whoever wins has to take the loser out for dinner/for a drink to soften the blow. I'm sure if either of you got the role you wouldn't be talking down to the other person, so shouldn't cause a problem on working relationship - you could even give thema bit of extra responsibility.
And of course an advantage of becoming supervisor would be the chance of management next - in which case you could promote your friend to supervisor. You'll never get anywhere in your careers through by adopting your currently friendship policy, I Hope you sort it out anyway, sounds like you're good enough mates to survive this :)
You both have to apply for the job so apply for it. If it doesn't bother either of you and you are both really good mates then it won't affect your friendship. Is there anyone else applying? Cos somebody else might get the job, so it's pointless worrying. I've been in the same situation myself and my friends were really happy for me when I got a promotion. You should try talking to your friend cos they'll be feeling exactly the same.
apply for the job, stay great friends,
whatever you decide, do so in discussion with your friend. Maybe one of you could be senior to the other (I assume this is promotion?) without mucking up your friendship, but if there is any doubt about that, I'd be inclined to come to an agreement that neither of you will apply for it. They can't make you apply and your friendship is worth more than the company, isn't it?
