WHSmith is a well-known highstreet store with an excellent reputation for quality and staff retention. I wish to experience the retail industry at the highest level and feel WHSmith will offer me the best training and environment to do this.
Although my experience in the retail industry is (minimal?) I think that I have a lot to offer WHSmith and look forward to sharing my skills and experience with an already established team.

Tell them what you like about the company and what makes you think that you would be asset to them, make sure to use some detail in your answer this will prove to them that you can be a detail oriented person most companies like to see that! Best of Luck!

Find out what exactly WHSmith is like as a company - their goals, ethics, etc. then write something about why you love literature and how WHSmith is the place that best suits you because of what they stand for, or something to that effect.
because it allows me to interact with people , maintain a casual but smart appearance , and work toward promotion .
or you could say "coz I'm skint !"
something like.it's a reputable company and that you like working with the public and that you work well as a team but you can also use your own initiative to work alone.stuff like that !

because i need a job and want the money . no i would put something like you like to work in a busy enviroment and provide people with a high level of service. your a good team player and just stuff like that really. good luck with your job

Tell them what value you can bring to the company, which no one else can.
tell them you are a devout christian and you don't mind overtime.
then tell them you are not really interested in anything remotely similar to "creativity". to you, the world is black and white.
then tell them you never have been interested in sex and with all the hours of your life you will dedicate to them will undoubtedly be good for keeping your sex drive at bay.
then tell them you you stab people in the back, especially if they do something you don't like and you like to hate on everybody you find to be unfunny
