You're absolutely right. For some reason employers want you to be employed when you're looking for a job. Doesn't make much sense does it? Maybe try to do some volunteer work while you're unemployed, it will make your resume look better if you're doing something valuable with your time.
Having given interviews and employed people, the main thing is why someone is out of work. If you have 2 people, one is already working and the other isn't, as unfair as it sounds you automatically feel like the working person might be more reliable, depenable etc etc. Thats only all things equal, as in, both have same qualifications, etc. Not that it used to influence me, as a woman i go with instinct, but thats rare i'm afraid!

Because employing someone, you need to know you're getting the right person, and you wonder. "Why are they out of work. what happened there then?"
Many reasons i suppose, under qualified, over qualified, laziness, 'I'm too good for that job', 'I'm not good enough for that job', age, lack of child care, disability, lack of experience, gawd theres loads of reasons as to why sometimes it may may be harder to find a job at times, i dropped out of school like a daft cow but Ive never been without a job, Ive always done something whether its been a cleaning job, receptionist or waitress, Ive never given up the quest for a job, ive never relied on anyone else, i support myself and my two boys, we have a nice home and life with determination as its roots. x.
When ever I was between jobs, it only took me about a week and a half to find a new one. But I was extremely active in my search, usually going to about 15+ interviews a week and sending my resume out to about 50-75 people in that same week.
The new receptionist's, at my current job, got her boyfriend a job there and when he came into the building he told me this was his 9th interview. He was out of work for MONTHS. I was astonished that he wasn't, at 27 years old, more active in his search.
There are a number of factors which I am sure are influencing the time it may take to find a job. Many of them have already been touched on by other people.
- There are fewer and fewer mid to high level jobs available and more and more people going for them.
- Many people (at least in the early stages of looking for a job) do not want to take a lower level job as they feel it is beneath them.
- Hiring managers will often ask themselves, "Why did this person lose their job?", "Is this something I will also have to worry about?" This can be mitigated by being open and up front with them about the reasons around your loss of a job.
- Some people who are out of work will expect the job to come to them. They will look but not to the extent that others will. You need to be aggresive in your search for a job.
- Also, being out of work may affect some people's confidence in themselves, so they do not come across as well as those who already have a job.

I just don't know, but you need to trust there is a reason for it. I substitute right now and I've been looking for a permanent job for 2 years; I have had alot of interviews but not hired on permanently yet. I keep applying and working on it as best as I can with all the rejection I have gotten. One gets out of the work mode when you don't work; I know also that many people are getting their jobs from people they know. There are also many people applying for one job, the competition is tough. I have been overqualified, under qualified, or don't know the right people. I MUST be closer to landing one. It's very frustrating!
