Working in a call centre. How easy is it to get used to long hours sitting at desk?

I start work in a callcenter in a couple of weeks. It receives calls from people in the uk with computer software problems. I haven't gone through any training yet, and I have to tell them everything abuot their products and how to use them properly. is it easy or does it take some getting used to. and the sitting, 8 hours of calls? what am I in for?

i worked in a call center for AT&T. i started out knowing nothing. then i was trained, and we actually had fun. your brain gets a workout in the begining until you know the answers instantly from all the repetitive calls about the SAME problems. once you get settled in you start making up your own games, like changing your voice or accent. you can have interesting conversations with your customers while figuring out their problems at the same time. usually call centers hold contests for their employees just to change things up a bit. dont' get me wrong, you will have bad days. unruley customers, customers being *icks just for the heck of it, you'll have your boss breathing down your neck now and then to get those numbers up, co-workers who don't know how to entertain themselves except to bug you. i had fun, i never had a dull day!!
No it is not easy.

If you are busy it is a breeze.
I did it for 4 years, and was happy to get out. I use to write operating manuals on the side because I would get so bored.

Make sure you can occupy yourself with something work related in order to pass the time.

Good luck.
If you like helping people and have fairly patient, thick skin, you'll do fine.

Just remember to take regular breaks, go for a walk at lunch every other day, and remember during the bad days that it's nothing personal, it's not bad.

At the software publishing company I work at, the call center folks are just down the hall.they do a great job and they don't seem overly stressed out or anything like that.
if you don't get many calls its boring the more calls and you don't notice time flying in .
bring water /juice
I worked outbound and hated it the trying to sell loans with Abbey .
I wouldv'e loved inbound if nothing happening you can natter to other co workers.
I have run call centres before - and it is a different type of work to get used to.

If the call centre is any good, I am sure that you will have full training and enough information to hand when you start the job. You should also be able to take regular short breaks, because talking on the phone all day is very tiring.
I worked in a call center for 2 years. Depending on how busy it is, you may or may not notice how fast time is going by..

If your employer allows it, it helps to have scratch paper and pen to make drawings. However, many companies do not like it because it can be distracting from your conversations.

Definetely use your breaks to take walks, even if it is simply around the building.
I've worked in a call center for 3 years and honestly, I gained about 10 lbs from just sitting, and eating at your desk. I'm still trying to lose it, even though it's been a year since I've worked there! You also become lazy eventually, and you get used to sitting all day long. Try not to make this a permanent job, but more of a learning experience and move on eventually. My old co-workers all have gained a lot of weight, so beware!
"Humans were not meant to be sitting in a desk looking at computer screens all day" It is horrible. I do not like to be crammed up at 1st place all the time. I feel like i'm squished!
its easy enough on here
I don't know about the job itself, but make sure you take regular breaks, every two hours. There are certain laws stating that after a certain sitting period, staff have a right to walk around- to prevent RSI (repetitive strain injury) etc.
It's the hours that will need getting used to. I know someone who worked for NTL, one day they would work 9-6 the next it might have been 2-11 the next day it could have been 11-8. And they didn't ever know whether they would be working Christmas day or not till the last week. Or when their day off would be each week.

Take as many calls as you can to keep your stats up, as it seems to be preferred to actually fixing the customers problem which would take longer. (they can call back and get another operator)

Good luck, you'll need it.
