Why does stress make us happy?
People who are not stressed at work are apparently miserable!

The thing that stresses myself, and I know stresses other people greatly is:

Stress creates a passive release of endorphins ( the ole fight or flight syndrome). In this case we typically fight (ie.. take on more stress, yell at someone, multi-task to the hilt) releasing even more endorphins (happy hormones!).
When the strees is reduced and we try to relax - many folks say they feel as if they crashed as the endorphin levels drop rapidly leaving a vacant or tired feeling.until the next stressor comes along!
If you want a muscle to grow larger and stronger, then you've got to subject it to repeated and increasing load or stress. Stop stressing or loading a muscle for a period of time and it atrophies (whithers and weakens). I'm experiencing this at the moment whilst recovering from arthritis which left me in great difficulties walking at times, and can assure you that it's sometimes painful, so I have to focus on the end result, losing the lard and putting some muscle back on, to stay happy.
Our intellectual abilities and deepest personalities work on the same principle. If you want to improve, for example, your numerical ability, you need to exercise your mind (subject it to stress) on a regular basis with the aid of a pencil, eraser and maths primer. The process itself might be painful, but the end result should make you happy. If we can successfully come through difficult situations we can grow as people - if we're never challenged (stressed) we never have a chance to grow.
If a person's job is not challenging them in any way it means that they are inevitably going to become bored, feel stuck in a rut, have worse health than those who are regularly challenged, and be more prone to alcohol or substance abuse.
It should be noted carefully however, that too much stress is as dangerous as too little.
I think a more sensible description would be that people who aren't busy aren't happy. Too much time to think about things that make them miserable. I've suffered some major stress recently, and it didn't make me too jolly!
