How do go about setting up a company name and registering it??

what are the costs, and is it a lenghty process? how long will it take? will this also get me VAT registered or is that another process? any help would be mostly appreciated.

Answers:
You can buy 'off the shelf' companies (i.e. Forms already filled in, etc), but if you want to set one up for yourself so that they reflect your company needs then you will need to fill in the following;

Form 10, Form 12, Articles of association and memorandum of association plus a payment of £40.

VAT registering will have to be done separately. There are certain rules and regs surrounding this too with regards to registration limits which you would need to look dependant on your expected turnover.
Companies house if you are in England and Wales. All the details are there.

Check out this web site, it breaks down all of the legalities, cost and advantages of incorporating your business. I'm about to do the same thing.

Good Luck!!
Firstly you have to make sure that the Company name you want has not already been registered. However, if time is of the essence, you can actually buy an "off the peg" company name, it could be a bit naff, I once bought a company called Trelhold, so it'll be that sort of thing. Several years ago it cost £100 so I have no idea what they charge now. You can probably do this on-line. Then you need to register it with Company House, again probably do this on-line. With regard to VAT that is another process, sorry I don't know how to do this, ask at the Inland Revenue office they are always helpful.
Good Luck with registering your company.

Hi Some good advice here, Companies House is the place to go if you want a specific name, if it is available, and you can get a set of memorandum of association and article of association, you can do it yourself for about £7.50 for a commissioner of oaths and £20.00 for companies house, it takes 20 working days.

The duport link state they do it same day for £29.00, I suspect the mem and arts are formulaic and generic, but hey so are most.
