How should you treat your boss on the first day?

My friend Sam gave her boss presents and jewellery on her first day of work as a management consultant. She received a note saying she was promoted in the next week. What do you think?

Answers:
i think her boss is a pimp.nd that job will not last long for your friend..self respect is the only way to go.
There's something more going on there.
Might work for women to men but if your a man don't go trying it on your boss, man or woman.!
do the same thing as sam
It just goes to show that sucking up helps - a lot
What a suck-up!!
I think you'd better ask yourself, "What would Jesus do?" Just ask him, honey, he'll lead the way.
i can't say what i think but i shall tell you, how this could have happened. She may have had skilled that allowed him to promote her to a higher level position due to her knowledge or you know what the other one is and i wont comment on how bad that is for not only him or her but for everyone working there!
that's not something I would do.

Not very professional.
The way you want to be treated
Treat them the same everyday. Your friend Sam gave her boss a little more than Jewelery. She probably got his family jewels and a pearl necklace.
Sounds like a bit of a tall tale.
listen carefully, smile, offer to make tea, take notes
Something smells fishy to me, no telling what she'll give her boss for Christmas !...:)
Sam is Ho ! and gave her boss way more than that the first week.

She will be a Vice President in no time.
Hmm, something is up there.
I doubt that will happen to just anyone without there being. reciprocity in another way.
Maybe your friend is promoted to some other position other than the job itself. I think there is something fishy there. First of all, who give gifts on first day on the job anyway.
In some places that's probably illegal (both the quick promotion and possibly the subtle bribes to get it) but happens all too often. It depends if your boss is a man or a woman though - I don't think the same trick would work if your boss was a woman and you were a man!
Treat him like he or she is your boss..
Respect he or she
Don't do anything that will try to make you look like a suck up
not enough "brown-nosing" forget the extra perks: baseball tix for a game he can't make, x mas bonus, etc. too much, and who knows what else he'll ask for.
Be very nice to he/she and they will like you. Also work hard,be nice, and always do your best. And don't give him/her a gift because it's like forcing them to give you a promotion but they don't think so. And you should work hard to get a promotion and maybe Sam will do a horrible job and you'll get the promotion. And that's how you should treat your boss on the very first day. ..... I know I'm good. sssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
I have never heard of such a thing.
In fact, if I were the boss, I would consider that unprofessional.

The boss already hired you because he/she thinks you are valuable right? Then prove true to that and remain friendly, professional, proactive, and punctual. Those traits are what will get you the big promotion. Save gift giving for a more appropriate time.

Besides, it feels a whole lot better to know you worked your way toward the top, rather than bribing the boss.
dont brown nose a new boss its obvious you only get a promotion if its deserved, just be yourself.
If she gave her boss a gift just because she wanted to that is great that it worked out to her better, but remember it may not always be that easy so take this opportunity to really prove what her can do and that the decision to promote her was not on vain
I sincerely doubt that story is true, a professional boss will be looking for someone who can carry their own on the playing field.
A lover buys you jewellery not a sub-ordinate.
there are three possibilities here
1. when a new boss moves in they like to search out the most popular person in the department and get them on side cos they are useful.
2. the boss sees your friend as a sucker who will do her job for her and take the rap when things go wrong. for a management consultant, or chainsaw consultant as i call them that won't be long.
3.the boss fancies your friend and wants to get her kit off

of it is always possible that the boss is good at what she does and recognises talent when she sees it
Ha ha ha - if she's been promoted, does that mean there's a vacancy?? Reckon I could be MD within a fortnight if I sleep with the boss tee hee .
that sounds so strange
Depends on the personality of the boss. Listen very carefully & pick up on clues.
suck up
