"Data Entry from Home" - are these a rip off or a genuine way to make spare cash?

Rule of thumb.
If they want money up front, steer clear. A legitimate business would not do this.
If you have to pay them, then its a scam
A rip-off.
Almost every single work-at-home plan is. That includes the old "stuffing envelopes" bit and the newer "electronic assembly" scam. All want money up front, a dead giveaway.
Would you take a job at a Doctor's Office as a receptioist if all you had to do to get the job was to send twenty quid to the Doctor?
I have yet to see one of these types of business make money for anyone other than the advertiser. (I'm British, living in the US, and there are no "kosher" ones here as far as I can tell!)
YOU should not be paying THEM - it should be the other way round! Never send money to any homeworking organisation, what do they need it for? Sounds fishy to me - steer well clear.
Have you been offered a position? or offered a business opp? If it is a position, then no - I wouldn't pay them either ( isn't that the opposite ) If it is a business of your own, then yes- you should be expected to put something down. If it is only $20, it's not that big of a risk.

I have heard of data entry, envelope stuffing ..etc jobs from home that do make a little extra cash on the side, but not worth the time put in. They always quit because of the hours.

Seriously, if they're genuine then you wouldn't have to pay then anything. I mean why should you pay to work for them since it's they who want the staff.you get me?
If you still want to go for it and pay up then don't blame anyone who's told you already that this is a scam.

ABSOLUTLEY NOT! DON'T DO IT! I will to tell you this. I tried that data entry system not once, but twice, at $49.99 a hit. By all technical means, I made $32.00, and I am yet to see that money. I spent another $50 on online surveys. Yeah, don't go there. Let me tell you this.I have never been more satisfied online results than I am right now. You obviously are interested online work at home income. The only thing you need to think about is this: "do I want to make a little money fast" or "significant income long term"? If you chose the 2nd one, congratulations because you are intelligent lol. Instant gratification is a horrible thing. If you could make thousands of dollars fast, what would be the point of you working long term? Why would you "get hired"? You can't make something out of nothing, but you can come close!

I've had a lot of experience over the past 3 years with this subject. I went through litereally 50+ different companies on the interent trying to make money while I was in college. There's sooo much crap out there and companies that promise you the world but deliver nothing but hype, it takes a while to seperate the crap from the genuine money making opportunities.

Unfortunatly they are ALL scams! There is not one that is genuine. Its a big shame because what they usually propose is that you will be entering data to support market research for big companies and that makes sense as clearly big companies do so.
It is however a scam to get you to pay them. It will list on the site that there is always a start up fee on any business. If they were genuine they would ask you to complete a data entry for free and then if the company was happy with your work they would pay you and the online site would take a percentage.
However this does not occur.
