Why are our banknotes so tatty and grubby?
Answers:
they are stuck in peoples pockets, passed around in dirty old mens pockets, found on the ground etc etc
because we never have time to preserve them they are in and out of our wallets so quickly!
The life expectancy of a dollar bill is only 18 months, unfortunately.
Think of all they go through, people's pockets, being counted or shoved in tills several times, going through the wash a few times, getting wet from rain etc, being through the post in cards, and of course we all know that at some point most bank notes have been used for snorting cocaine!! They are also in circulation for years. Try keeping a bit of paper in your pocket and see how long before it gets scruffy!

Because of one or more of:
-poor handling
-failure of commercial banks to exchange old with new notes at the apex banking institution
-re-issue of old notes by the apex bank
-high cost of mints
-high volume of cash outside the banking system (in most developing economies)
- poor patronage of banks by some small time sellers
Maybe you need somebody to LAUNDER them for you. Maybe the mafia can help.
Seriously - wear and tear. The gov't takes them out of circulation as they get too beat up. Banks generally watch the bills and pull ratty ones out and trade in for new ones.
It's actaully quite gross, me and my mum were talking the other day and she had watched a programme where they analysed money, not just bank notes. You wouldn't believe what they found on them, things like traces of drugs and urine. If you think about the millions of hands, pockets, wallets etc these things have passed through and everything that they've touched it's quite horrible; god knows what people have been doing with it or what they've touched and then not washed their hands. ugh! So its not just bank notes you need to be worried about!
It costs money to keep printing new ones all the time. We are paying for democracy in Iraq and Afghanistan and they are ever so thankful to us. First things first !
