I have recently been discharged from personal bankrupcy.how can I open a bank account?
Answers:
A lot of banks wont touch you for about 6 years with a checking account but some will give you a very basic account with only a cash card (cashpoint card). These do allow direct debits but that is about it
When I was discharged I went to the Nationwide and they gave me their basic account. Also the Co-op will deal with discharged bankrupts they use the post office for the banking needs in my area.
Be wary of any of the Internet ones that say they will deal with bankrupts they tend to want money up front and a lot are just cons, I fell into that trap.
Capital One do a credit card where for example the limit is £200 and you pay that as a deposit up front then use the credit card as normal and eventually you get the deposit back or if you close the account you get it back.
Hope this helps
Good luck you will need it.

You will only be able to get one with no overdraft ie cashcard from Halifax or Nationwide do one.
I'm sorry to hear about your personal discharge, hope it wasn't painfull and that you are feeling better soon.
simple go to the butcher's and open an account...doh
You walk in with a bunch of cash and say, I'd like to open a savings account and a checking account.
Yes you can! your debt has been forgiven by the law. However, don't go back to the same bank! banks don't play fair!
My friend has been through this and the only bank she could get an account with was co-operative bank.
Good luck. x
Hi Mike; It would help if you gave us a clue which nationality you are ?
If your British Pete T is right - There is no check on those Account's as they don't allow credit or overdraft, they can be used as a Debit card only.Welcome to Answer's.
Go to any bank and open an account.
I know several people who lost all in the stock market and filed Chapter 7 to start over. It happens more often than you may think. Some were Financial Advisors.
They were able to open an account right away.
Go to a small bank Not the major bank chains. Many small banks offer you better accounts and service. Just don't apply for overdraft checking or any other credit account.
Don't go to any bank that you used for a credit account that was part of the bankruptcy.
In a year or so you may get a pre-approved credit card offer in the mail that will help you to reestablish credit. Special Auto loan programs are available as well.
After 2 years you will have no problem getting a mortgage.
You will be OK. Work hard and save money and you will get back to a normal life.
