How do companies get my ex-directory (unlisted) phone number?

And with the Telephone Preference Service, calls, especially from India, still come in. How are they getting private numbers?

Answers:
from mailing lists they buy, is you wish for yourself to be removed from this sign up to the telephone preference service, this takes approx 28 days to set up, they put you on a list that means and unauthorised marketing calls can be reported to them whereupon that company can be fined for invasion of your privacy.
I suffered the same problems though since signing up to this I have not recieved a single call...bliss.

Are you buying stuff online or entering any contests online? They can get your information that way.
some company somewhere has your number in its database and they have sold the info. If you tell the person that calls to remove your number from their list. by law they have to do it. It will work eventually
from lists, there is really nothing you can do about it. sorry.
Look, if you ever signed up for any service, sometimes even your basic cable, then you made your number public. Companies trade lists in order to have a larger customer base. Their privacey policey states that they will not SELL your information, but trading is free game. Sometimes, you sign up with companies that have no privacey policey. They basically sell your information to the highest bidder. Good luck with that.
If you give out your telephone number to companies on the net they can pass it on to other companies too.
I noticed that even though i'm ex directory, i'm still visible on many different internet searches.
Everything you do on the Internet is collected and sold to companies as mailing lists. Also phone companies have in the past been known to sell there customer information to companies as well.
Dear the best way to avoid calls from companies is to register your number on the 'National do not call list' You can register your home as well as your cell numbers.

You can got to the below link to register your self.

As for your question how these companies are getting your unlisted number, many credit card companies give out your information to third parties. Last year they had to inform all their customers regarding their practices, chances are that you received something, thought it was junk mail and threw it out. If you did not respond to that notice, you allowed your number to be given out.

I hope this helps.
Unlisted and unpublished are two diferrent things. Unlisted you are not in the directory but information can give your number. These telephone solicitors often just run down a list of number one after the other and get unlisted and all other numbers by chance. I just hang up if someone starts a sales pitch.
Some buy them, Money Supermarkets etc on the net, when you request any info regarding mortgages, insurance and so on you put your details and phone number (which you think is probably just for them) but they sell the information at a very high price. So beware of giving out any of your details over the net even if it is just for information.
