I am looking for personal finance software which will help me with my income and outcome. Also it would be perfect if it could download my bank accounts from Halifax, First Direct etc.

I've always been a Quicken fan. Before buying, check with your bank to see if transaction downloading is possible.
For Windows xp - Microsoft Money. - You can probably download a free copy from bittorrent network, rather than buy it..
For Linux - GNU Cash is good & free.
