What is a building society roll number and do you have one even if you are with a bank?

I'm with a barclays at the moment

Answers:
No, you pretty much answered your own question. Barclays is a bank. Not a building society. So if you are filling in a form, leave that section blank.
the roll number is the same sort of thing as your account number
it a code to identify Ur building society account, banks as a general rule don't have them, just a sort code and account number, some Internet accounts have one tho, as well as a sort code and account number
One difference between a bank and a building society is that you become a member of a building society. The roll number is your membership identification. You will have a roll number with a building society, but it won't affect your bank at all.
I think it depends on what type of account you have if you have got one it should be on your card I know Halifax does and Abbey if its a savings account.
Building Societies have different ways of moving the money around to the banks.
With a Building Society, they accept the money first and then pass it on to the account holder. With a bank, the money goes directly into your account.
No, you don't have to have a role number if you are with a bank.
Wasn't too bad a question - I do payroll and dread it when employees come in with Building Society accounts - they can be really difficult to work out how to pay them and they are often delayed because of the Building Society rather than the fact that I haven't paid them!
