Hi there

Please note that laws are slightly different for USA and UK. I am answering this question based on UK experiences.

First I would seek some free legal advice on the confidentiality agreement to make sure you are not getting ripped off. Ideally via a friend, or otherwise try these out .http://www.freelawyer.co.uk/idx/index.as.

Next I would patent the invention. It need not cost a lot but it does also depend on what the invention is. For guidance on costs check this site .http://www.patent.gov.uk/patent/forms/uk.

Most importantly I would get the patent in your name, then start discussions with companies. There are lots of greedy people out there who would not think twice about steeling your idea.

Good luck
PATENT FIRST YOU IDIOT OR THEY WILL STEAL IT.

ARE YOU A LAWYER? they can have clauses in page 50 in the samll print
If you have answered one those high powered ads from TV, promising to market, patent, promote, and find a MFG., forget it.

They are not legit. Many inventors have been swindled for up to $10,000.00 & more. They do nothing. These outfits have never turned down an invention. The confidentiality is no problem.
DO NOT sign their contract. DO NOT. I've been there, and after reading the contract, it's worthless, but will commit you to $$$$.
You can apply for a patent yourself but it can be quite involved, and there is a fee. There is a legitimate orginization that will evaluate . The cost is around $250.00.
Attorneys may charge up 5-6,000 dollars., including a patent research, quite involved, but necessary.
After applying 1 1/2 years ago, the USPO has advised my attorney it will be six years to issue a patent. It can be done sooner with an additional fee.
I worked on mine for more than 8 years, and still improving. I don't see a market at the present time. Cost is an issue.
You are welcome to email me if you like.

Good luck!
if your invention is so good and the company is pleased with what you have,go and ask for a up front payment of them to help you patent it.im sure they know a good investment in what you have shown them.good luck.
