How long does it take to clear a US check in the UK?

Hi, if i have checks from bank accounts in the United States and deposit them in a UK bank in London, how long usually does it take to have them cleared? Is there a service fee charged for that?
Thanks.

Answers:
svc chg would depend on the bank

in the US, it can take 21 days for a check to clear(or bounce), so adding an ocean, I'd allow another 10 days
1 week dependant on what bank and there is usually a £5 fee or more but not all banks
I think it is quite expensive to cash an American Cheque in a UK bank due to the charges they make and it takes longer than a normal cheque. Many eBayers will only accept payment via paypal in UK Sterling because of this. unless it's changed since I last looked :o)

in England cheques take about 3 weeks from abroad .They incur a charge of about £5
five working days, ie one week - charges would be considerable
this is a nightmare. I paid a US cheque into my NatWest account four weeks ago. Still nothing. I got a letter a week later acknowledging it, but so far that's it. The letter warned of "potentially significant" charges - Ouch.
Will take approx 3-5 weeks. However a cheque is never 'cleared', it can be returned at any time
5 days
why the charge and the time lag, anyone know?
