Answers:
Most banks offer a basic bank account which has no credit facilities but does offer direct debit facilities, i think all you need to prove is your address and you can have 1, think the Coop Bank or Natwest are the only ones that will give you a solo/electron debit card but most of them only give you a basic ATM. I would check with the major high street banks about student accounts which give you credit quite easliy i think, although i could be wrong there, but I would avoid the Halifax like the plague, Co op are very good though! hope that helps

Sometimes bank staffs can be arseholes.
Show them complete confidence. Having a bank account is not a priviledge, it is in fact a good revenue stream for the banks.
Ask for a bank manager. Usually that question will work magics. Refer to terms from Financial Services Authority.
Ask your student union. If you are an international student there will be an international student officer at the university.
Don't settle for anything less.
Enjoy fighting with the bank :D
