What salary should I be getting paid?

I have worked for the same company for 4 years now. I started as a receptionist, then administrator and now I'm a Trainee Quantity Surveyor.

I have yet to have my salary reviewed for my new job but I wondered if anyone can tell me what I should be after. I'm 26. I have already started at uni and by the time my review comes round I will have been there also most a year.

Any ideas?

I'll be working 47.5 hours a week, Monday to Friday. I'm in the West Mids, UK so salary in £ please.

Sorry, I can not answer your question specifically but I will add that you only ever get market proportional salary when you move company. The longer you stay in one place the further you fall behind the industry norm. I think the fact that you will have been doing this for one year without review suggests that your employers are not about to blow you away with their generosity. If it truly is a training role then get as much experience as fast as you can and then move. Apart from a very few exceptions the only way up is elsewhere. Finally, please remember that when you do look elsewhere you look for a more senior role. Moving sideways is a very slow way of getting nowhere. Hope this helps and good luck.
£8.6million
around £23000-25000. and your hours of work look so long!
Hi Sarah - on the old Yahoo front page, there was a 'Jobs' section, and within this you could check the salary youre on, vs countrywide positions. I dont know if this is still an option, havent had to use it. Itd def be a good idea to have a nosey through the papers etc in your area, or online job sites likeReed etc, check out 'your' job and see whats on offer. Then at your review you can quote different companies and their wages. Hope this helps, good luck! Bex

I am in the U.S. so I apologize for my lack of localized geography knowledge. That job seems far away from you, but it may be a research starting point.

Heck, I have even heard of the job but I wanted to try to answer the question anyway. :)

What do you do?
try salary.com However, I am not sure if it covers the UK.
It depends on the company. You have obviously developed your skills at a company and are now learning a profession so they are seeing it as an investment in your future. They may therefore pay you a smaller amount than another company (because they are taking into account the fact they are training you).

Staying at any company for an extended period of time (usually) means that you will be on a lower salary than if you jump between companies for the best deal.

I'm 27 and since moving into having my own firm, I have had my salary go up considerably. It's really a case of risk - I would personally recommend that you get your training under your belt first and then look at what other companies could offer you as a quantity surveyor. It all depends on how your salary would have gone up - in 4 years I would assume you'd have at least 5% increase + inflation a year given that you have already moved up in jobs. However, I've seen companies pay out low wages (especially to current employees) so I wouldn't be surprised if you were on £16k or less.

It also depends on the company - sometimes smaller organisations can not afford to pay out as much as larger firms.

A word on your hours though - 47.5 hours a week is more than a person should be doing in the UK. Even having my own firm, I have to sign a declaration that states that I work more than normal levels. If you are salaried, you should ensure that you work an amount closer to 37.5 hours.
