Is there anyone else out there who thinks traffic lights are a waste of time and money and not eco friendly?
Then there are the times when traffic lights at a junction stop working altogether. What happens? Well, surprise, surprise! It seems that the good old British motorist is more than capable of negotiating the average junction without so much as a dent in sight. Don't believe me? It happened at one of Plymouth's busiest cross roads only weeks ago.
Spend the money where it's really needed - schools & hospitals, not useless traffic lights.

A copy of an email I sent recently,
Dear Highways dept,
I write with regards to the recently (last few months) installed traffic lights at the junction of the A607 and Craftsmans way entry to the East Goscote Industrial Estate.
I travel through this Junction 5 mornings per week in the direction Melton to leicester, my travel times vary but are generally around the 4am time. Most mornings I am the only road user and yet I am nearly always forced to either slow down or stop as the lights change to red as I approach them.
As I am following the major road this seems ludicrous.
I understand that traffic lights are installed to improve road safety, assist to maintain traffic flows and allow all users to transit through a junction. To stop traffic on the major road, when there is no one else there and no one wishing to exit from Craftmans way satisfies non of those. Indeed all it does is frustrate the motorist and increase emissions as vehicles brake and accelerate.
As I see it there are several possible remidies,
1.Turn the lights off after the evening rush hour, and back on again in the morning.
2.Have the lights on during peak periods only.
3.Force the lights to stay green for traffic in either direction on the A607 unless traffic wishes to exit the industrial estate, or turn right into the estate when travelling in the direction of leicester.
4.Remove the lights completely.
Any of the above would solve the problem, 1,2 and 4 would also have the benefit of less electricity being used.
The same could probably be said of many traffic lights in the county.
I look forward to your comments.
I think their purpose is abused when towns and cities attempt to use them for speed control and it vitually screws up the entire traffic flow. They had an intended purpose to which they should be used for with descretion! You don't need one at every single intersection in America and that is why we have "parking lots" during rush hour on our freeways! But then again, is there anything politicians don't abuse? I also love when politicians all of a sudden are expert engineers in whatever field comes to mind for them!
go on google video and write in the search in capitals ONLY IN INDIA this is the answer to your question very funny ,sorry i cant work out how to do the link but its easy enough to find.
In Jersey they have a filter system where each side takes it in turn for one car to go!! It sounds daft but really works!! I suppose like roundabouts but one car each side!
there is more waste then traffic lights! its the way things are and they do work!!
if you are talking about a small town, your idea of replacing the traffic lights by roundabouts could be applicable .
what about the monster cities with millions of cars ? man you must be kidding me!!!
depends where the light is, i mean if it was in, like NY, then you defenetly need it, but if its somewhere really country, then its a waist of alota money.
The new traffic lights at junction14 of the M5

caused so many traffic jams that they are now turned OFF during peak traffic times. They are reckoned to be the only lights in the UK where this happens. At all other times of day, there are queues of traffic. These queues disappear during the rush hour when the lights are off.
Sadly, it's my observation that there are an increasing number of idiots on the road who have to be told very simply what to do on the road. These individuals can't concentrate on more then one thing at any one time (looking both left, right and straight ahead when approaching a roundabout) and so all the information has to be put into a simple format all in one place.
Near where I live there's a small B road that crosses over an A road which is one of the main routes into London. Every once in a while the lights don't work, 'give way to the right' goes out of the window and the people on the A road cause a jam right across the roundabout leaving the B raodees stranded.
We need traffic lights because a select few motorists are dumb and inconsiderate.
Try going to Italy , traffic lights there are just a matter of opinion. I wouldn't feel safe if it was the same here!
Most traffic lights are taking the place of zebra crossings round my way. It's the idea of our wonderful mayor (Ken L.) who thinks traffic jams are the best thing to happen to this capital city. Some lights are those where the pedestrian presses to go across, but most are on "timed to be more red than green", which serve no purpose at all.
