If its got to be Automatic, then 1.anything is almost useless. a 1200cc engine is not man enough to operate with an automatic gearbox, and because of the amount of work they do and the pressure they are under they tend to be highly unreliable too. If you were buying brand new you may be safe chancing it, but you must stick to 2litre or above. Perhaps a long-stroke 1.8 as this will operate with a more torque-oriented type of power which releases less pressure on the solonoids, but below that you are playing with fire, thats why they are rare. I would suggest a Mazda as I have driven several auto's and the Mazda 626 had the best Automatic gearbox I ever used, even better than the one in the Jaguar I have now.
Your best bet is a pre owned Toyota (ie Corolla, Paseo) or Honda Civic. These hold up the best for older cars with alot of miles on them.
you want cheap trouble free motoring, the best auto i ever had was a ford fiesta, ok, it was scary at 90mph, and had no refinements, but it cost me 125 quid and i ran it into the ground for 4 years and sold it for 80 quid.
DONT buy a metro, or anyting malaysian, jap autos are good, but can be rot boxes,
i drive a 18 yr old, 2.5 straight six turbo diesel volvo, ive had it 4 years and paid 1000 for it, its now got 153ooo miles and last year it cost me 2 quid for the mot. my fully comp insurance is just over 200 quid..and it returns 40mpg.
buy the best second hand used quality car, with a full service history..a 20 year old volvo is a far better bet than a 10 year old ford escort.
why 1200cc? cheap tax? pay the extra tax, believe me, itll be worth it.
I am lusting after a Hyundai Atoz - automatic. You can buy a second-hand one for under £2000. Problem is my Astra is worth more so difficult to part-exchange.
i had a ford fiesta automatic it was a great car cheap to run cheap insurance and cheap tax! was such a lovely car to drive i would def recomend a fiesta! good luck hunting!

check the autotrader site.just bought a 2005 auto vaux zafira for 5560..a bargain.type automatic in the keyword,.you will find a good one for 1500..good luck
