The ubiquitous Series 5 Ford Fiesta is a good choice. Smallish outside dimensions for city use, but comfortable enough for long trips - aircon if you get an LX version - cheap to run and service - very reliable - enough space for large items (drop the rear seat backs ) - dateless design - extremely rewarding to drive (good brakes/handling/ride) - excellent security (good locks and an effective immobiliser, therefore not easy to steal) - incredible economy from the Yamaha developed engine, and they always sell on easily since they are ideal for the new driver, and make a good 'second' family cars. Best of all you can get an excellent car for relatively little money.
PS I'm not a Ford dealer!! But I have regular access to one of these excellent cars and enjoy driving it very much, even though I own a Mercedes myself.

Get a diesel they have much better fuel economy than petrol engines, particularly for urban driving

for how many people and what will you be transporting? If it's just you, then the VW Lupo diesel scored very highly with Clarkson on Top Gear, for just that - city driving plus capable motorway delivery.
All Toyota and Nissan models are very reliable , give good M P G , Good for High Mileage , Spares are readily available. But like most things in Life "You Get what You Pay For" Take your Time and be carefull when looking = there is always another one somewhere else -- Good Luck.
go for a small diesel like a vw lupo diesel it,ll average 60+mpg and handle motorways quite well
A lot of people at my work who have company cars go for Ford Focus. They seem to be pretty reliable all round.
Any mid-size Japanese made car is good for the London traffic and also on the motorway journey. I would prefer the Toyota
Corolla 1.6L because it's a reliable, comfortable, high performance, low in fuel consumption and the least problematic
car. Also. it's a long lasting car and doesn't breakdown easily
on the road.

I have to agree with the for fiesta recommendation, Went on motorway in a 1.4 petrol fiesta with four adults and luggage, at motorway speeds with ease! Some road noise in rear.
Honda Jazz 1.3, hideously reliable and tempting size for London.
