I would forget about buying on the web and buy local - get your local free paper and have a browse through that..
If you buy of the web you will be looking at cars that are miles away and then the seller has you at a complete advantage, you're not going to drive all that way to look at a car and then not buy it.. buy local!!
ebay would be the best on the web. otherwise look for cars with "for sale" signs on them in your neigborhood
Good and Cheap are contradiction in terms. There really is no such thing, but you might try an ad paper, sometimes owners sell cars they no longer need. I certainly would not buy a car from the Net.

Dont get one off the web look in the trade it thats where i got mine you can get one nearer to home it has details about the car and you can go look at it check it out before ya buy or take someone along who knows abit about cars

Search for cars local to you, say 5 or 10 miles away.
Go and look at them.
You'd be surprised how willing they are to sell at the moment, Christmas funds needed!
If you are uncertain on your mechanical knowledge, take someone with you who is competant.
They are always useful for knocking the price down too!

You dont need an account, most sellers put thier phone number on the auction and actually like to sell before the auction ends!

Look on the Auto trader website (www.autotrader.co.uk). If you do go for somehting on eBay, it's a good idea to try and view first before bidding. There's no way you'd hand over any cash without giving any car a good once-over in the real world.
as for the 306, the 1.4 should make a fine first car. Cheap insurance, and miles better to have a crash in than, say, a Corsa. Watch out for electrical faults on these cars. Mechanical parts generally aren't that bad.

It is best that you find a nice used car in your local area. Shop around at different places. I am sure that you will find what you are looking for. It is not good to buy a car online, because you don't know what you are getting! At least if you shop around in your area, you can test drive the car. That way you know if the car is good or not.
(Note:when test driving make sure you run the hell out of that car. If something is wrong with it, (using too much oil,
tranmission is bad, bad motor) You will know. It's always better to be safe than sorry. Some things are okay to buy over the net (games, toys, etc. But cars are a different story. You really don't know what you are buying. So shop around in your area. In my opinion, it would be best that way.
I was haveing a look on autotrader.co.uk yesterday and I was amazed at the bargains for beer money, bought a 1999 Saab 900 for £600 and its amazing!

personally i would suggest that you look on places such as ebay or go onto a site such as google and type in cars for sales or car auctions.
