Answers:
You have a short circuit in the system. Check the wiring and make sure that the switch that activates the rear defrost is well. That'll solve the issue.
you need to get a new car
Your heater wiring is touching the metal work of the car somewhere

As this car is a hatchback the break/short is likely to be round the wiring where it goes between the tailgate and the roof>Don't be tempted to put a higher rating of fuse in because this could result in a fire!
What!

Don't start it and call a mechanic. Immediately! Chances are that there is a loose connection with your cables.
JUST QUIT USEING THE REAR DEFOGGER.DUH! HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD THIS IRRESISTABLT URGE TO USE IT?
GET RID OF THAT FRENCH PIECE OF CRAP OR DIDN'T YOU NOTICE YOU WAS THE ONLY ONE DRIVING ONE.I WONDER WHY?
Replace the faulty fuse.
You've probably got a wire that's grounding on the car when it shouldn't be. AKA a wire touching your car.

You might want to have someone who knows what they're doing taking a look at it. Because you can really screw up the wiring if you've never done it before.
If memory serves me, that is a very large window, you can unplug it, the wire running from the car to the window should slip off, this will help you until you figure out what is causing the short, which will be a pain!.LATER
Hmmm - this could get tough. Not really something to diagnose here, but the person who said stop using it might be on to something (of course safety first)! Electrical probelms can be tricky to find amd you clearly have a short somewhere. Not that it could not be repaired, but it may take time and $ so be prepared. The problem with a short is it can be anywhere. A pinched wire under the seat. A bare wire in the fuse box. A hot wire touching ground.
Check to see if you have a short in your heating coil in the window or in your wireing to it.
i own a repair shop, and the first question i have to ask you ,are you putting back the right size of fuse for it,because if not it will blow it ,if you are ,,then it has to have a short in it somewhere ,simply put it may be going to metal on it and causing it to blow the fuses, this is going to be hard to find, you,ll have to start at the rear window switch and trace it all the way back until you find a bare spot in it ,and his can use a lot of your time up,but this is how i have to do it also in the shop,if you cant find it you may have to take it to a sho,and have them find it,,some times a short can be really hard to find even for a good mechanic, good luck with it,i hope this help,s.
your car is 14 years old!

oh my god! you tight get buy a new one!
vwcarman your input is not needed. Troll. There is short in the wiring system. Try a auto glass company that would have the back window with the metal wire installed on the glass. Or the Dealer but that could get real expensive.
