Car problems - can anyone help?

Over the last 2 days my Seat Ibiza 1.6 (6 years old, 94000 km on the clock) has intermitently shuddered whilst driving, it lasts for a split second when it happens and it feels like the car wants to stop. I have had a faint clunking under the car for some months but only when i start my journeys and recently, the engine has also has not exactly purred like a kitten - whilst sitting idle, the rev meter goes from 10 down to 5 or 6 and back again (I dont know a great deal about cars as you can probably tell). My engine oil is checked regularly although I have not checked or changed my gearbox oil/fluid or whatever at all. I will be taking it to agarage but wondered if anyone had any idea what the problem might be and/or how much i can expect to pay at a garage to have this looked at? Thanks and apologies if I have used bad terminology and for my embarrasing lack of car knowledge!

sounds like the car needs a good service to me
Hi,

Your car problems could be a number of things but it seems that you only have the problem when stationary. Therefore you could need new spark plugs to make it fire better, or it could be the richness of the fuel/ air mixture going into the engine (a garage can twiddle a screw to put that right). If it happens all the time then it could be water in the fuel tank. If it happens when the car is cold only then it could be the choke system isn't quite right. As for the cost, I notice that you have put Km's instead of miles so I assume you are not in the UK or America. I don't know the labour rates of your local area so have no idea on the price but I wouldn't have thought it was that much because it doesn't sound like a major problem. Sorry this isn't more help full
NOT A CLUE
BUT YOU SHOULD TRADE IT IN FOR A LEXUS IS200
TOP BOMBING MOTOR
WOULD NOT DRIVE ANYTHING ELSE
It sounds very like the spark plugs they need to be changed
Could be the fuel filter or air filter.
sounds like a problem with the emission controls. do you have a light on the dash that comes on when it does it. would be a yellow light that says check engine. it is best to take to a dealer.
I'd change the fuel filter and the air filter and pour a bottle of redex (or equivalent) into the fuel tank to help clean the injectors. You may also need to change your lambda probes.

It may be something as simple as a loose connector on a sensor, so its worth checking all the leads and cables under the bonnet for something loose.

If it still does it then get your fault codes read at a garage and see what it says.
It probably need a damn good tune
tune it first.. ill bet you have not done a thing since you got it.
