How long do i have to stop drinking before DVLA medical?

After a long ban for dui i have to take a liver function test (blood). I am not a heavy drinker but used to drink much more than i do now. How long before the liver recovers? By the way i will never drink and drive again It's just plain stupid.

You need to discuss this with your doctor and take an LFT to see the state of your liver now. The cost for these is around £54 pounds but your GP may do it for free. You need professional advice - substance misuse is my professional domain as a clinician. Even if you do not see yourself as a problem drinker in contrast to other people it does not mean that you are within safe limits for your body, you must assess the damage (if any) that you have already done to it.

Your GP may prescribe Vit B strong Co and Thiamine to help to reduce damage to your liver and improve its function.

Please see him well in advance of the DVLA medical. I am glad that you have relaised how unwise it is to drink and drive and wish you all the very best for your future.
Take your worries away.. money. am I right. You will have something to do better.
Good for you. Its not smart but we all make mistakes .I'd say your liver should be more or less ok but I wouldn't drink for a week or so beforehand just to be on the safe side !
If you have any damage to your liver it may never heal.
Hey at least 3 months. But that will still probably blow it.
Dependent on how heavy a drinker you were your liver may never heal and your liver enzymes may always be slightly raised. The upshot of this is liver function is not a reliable indicator of alcohol consumption and the Doctor is not using it to determine whether or not you are still drinking. He may take a blood alcohol level but if you are no longer drinking then you'll have no problem. Doctors are not daft they can tell by looking at you whether or not you are still dependent on alcohol. You should sail through it.
Your liver will recover b4 your hang over does, so dont worry. Good on ya 4 learning from ya mistakes. Happy motoring(drink-free)
