I have a Ford Escort S reg estate - Clutch broken/not working?
Answers:
Sounds like a broken cable. This is a common problem with Escorts.
It's easy enough to check. There should be a cable attached to the top of the clutch pedal. If there is (it means it hasn't broken at that end!) pull it - if it pulls away, that's your problem.
It's not a particularly difficult job, you just need to thread the new cable through the same holes and adjust it until the clutch feels right. If you don't feel up to doing it yourself, get a mobile mechanic to do it for you.
could be just the cable, if the peddle is looser than normal, if not might be the gear-box
If the cable was broken the cluch pedel would probably not return, just be on the floor.
could be the mechanism behind the pedal, its called the ratchet and pawl, they are made of plastic and they wear,
without the engine running try pressing the clutch pedal and listen for a clicking noise,if u can hear it it should be that
It should be very obvious if the cable or adjuster have broken, the clutch arm will not move when the pedal is pressed.
If the clutch arm moves then your problem is more serious.
Most garages will have no problems with an escort , just aim for £20 per hour not £75 or more
It's not uncommon for the release fork (on the outside of the gearbox, attached to the cable) to break. It breaks where you can see it so you will have to remove it by taking out the pinch bolt and having a look. If it has broken it causes the clutch to not fully disengage, hence you couldn't select gears.
if you're clutch pedal is stuck on the floor then more than likely it is the cable half jour job to replace roughly but if you are not getting into gear when you press pedal then your clutch itself is gone that a big job in itself most of the day as the gearbox hjas to come out .best thingto do is take it to a good mechanic with a good reputationand get it checked out
is the pedle lose?
if so cable if not ie you have presure as you press it down,
then clutch is broken
