Buying new car..?

What are the obvious things to look for when buying, also.has anyone purchased from auto trader before??

Answers:
you are nearly always better buying from a reputable dealer, and never buy from friends or friends of friends if you want the friendship to continue.

When buying from a main dealer, always remember that there is at least £1500 accross the proce of a second hand car, This is there so they can give you a flattering part exchange price for your old rust bucket. (£1000 min px anyone?)

If you don't have a part exchange go for the discount, don't forget it's a negotiation, hit them hard and expect them to try and beat you down.

If you are taking out finance, the purchase price is not as relevent as the monthly payment, they can give you more px if you are using their finance as they make profit on the interest. The only thing that matters though is that you can afford the payment.

Finaly, Don't expect a discount for cash, as i said abouve, the garage makes money from finance deals, it doesn't get this money if you pay cash or arange your pwn finance with the bank.

Tell tale things to watch out for on a car are

Rust around the weel arches

Stone chips on the front (lots of chips = boy racer)

Worn Steering wheel, Pedle Rubbers and Gear Leaver on a low to mid mileage car = run away (clocked)

If the no.s on the milometer don't line up it's been clocked

Look down the length of the car, has it had many trolly dent's.

Are any of the panels off colour? signes of a major accident, very hard to match metalic paint.

Make sure the doors all open with the same key, if not it has been broken into and had a lock replaced.

Under the bonet. - Check for a clean engine.

Is the paint under the bonet the same colour as the rest of the car? If not stay clear, it has been in a smash.

check for service history and mot certificates (good proof of mileage)

Finaly - NEVER buy a car at night or in the rain, Darkness and rain hide a multitude of sins, You won't kneel down in a pudle and the salesman knows this. Artificial light doesn't show up colour differences.

Now you are scared to death, have fun. If you can afford it have an AA inspection.

sorry for spelling mistakes, spell checker not working
high mileage, rust
if they start the car & the radio comes on then they are hiding something
you can do an hp check - go on parkers.com it will also give you a guide price
Safety, boot space, big family or small, comfort inside, read the Car Magazine reports, etc. these factors are important when you are purchasing a new car.!
For a new car - make sure it has no scratches on it.. you want it MINT!

Used car - make sure the milage is = to its age aprox 20,000 KM per year.
look for wear and tear on gear stick, and foot pedals,if smooth and shining it has had a lot of use, take for a good test drive, and get a garage to look over it.
Look for depriciation on a model. A car with 5,000 miles is much cheaper than one with none. Also, the kinks have been worked on, and the car is in better working condition.
Check out the site www.consumerguide/autos.com-th. is a great source for wholesale prices and ratings for cars in different categories.

Finally, autotrader is definitely not a bad idea.
Ok every1s telling you to look for high millage but it aint no good getting a car with good millage thats been thrashed and not looked after or serviced regurly is it. Check for a full service history. a well looked after car can do 200,000 miles easily. if your after a cheap run around get a ford escort or fiesta if its got a fsh looks like its been well looked after then it probably has obivously check 4 rust and all that. If it dnt feel right then walk away remember its your money.

Is the paint under the bonet the same colour as the rest of the car? If not stay clear, it has been in a smash. Not necersarily true may have just had a respray do a hpi test then your kno for sure

As for the radio comeing on lol a lot of cars radios come on when you start the car so they may not be trying to hide anything just turn it off. check all the electrics are working if they dont all work is this reflected in the price? if not it could be a good way of knocking the price down. Check the tyres aswell
