I would say save a littltle bit more money,and this will open a larger field of cars available to you,and better quality.£1000-£1500.00 will give youa whole lot more cars and choice.
agree search used car sites like autotrader and exchange and mart are your best bet, not sure of the quality of car you will get for that amount. you may find a bargain tho so get searching!
