DVLA Fines, help?

I sold my car as part of a trade in to a motor dealer in June. I sent of my part of the registration document, but this has either been lost in the post or at Swansea. When I sold the car, I got a refund on my road tax. The DVLA, without previous enquiries or warnings, have now issued me with a fine for not informing them that I have sold the car and haven`t retaxed the car or Sorned it.
The problem is I did inform them, but as I just sent the document by normal post, I can`t prove that I sent it. How do i fight this?

same thing happened to me, was issued with an £80 fine. Ignored it and nothing ever happened.
You could write to them explaining the situation I have found them to be understanding in the past.
do you have a receipt from the dealer for the car or if not could you get one, photo copy the receipt and send it recorded delivery to the DVLA that should get it sorted
I hope you took a photocopy of the document, they are wll known for losing info and its vital to keep a copy
oh thats a hard one, someone just told me yesterday to use speacial delivery , for sending the post to dvla as, the do this missing thing, next always do speacial delivery
You can contact DVLA on there website. This sould sort the problem out quicker than writing to them.
There should have been a section on the refund form to indicate your reason. Unfortunately in all big orgs seperate dpts deal with seperate parts and don't tell each other. Unfortunately dealers don't inform the DVLA they have the car, the next buyer does. Write to them and explain. Also the dealer should give you a letter stating his ownership and dates of such.
The fact is, that they gave you a refund indicates they knew the car was sold or off the road therefore they have no case on you and no court would uphold an action against you.
Always make a photocopy of anything you send in the post which is important, post gets lost everyday - not just by DVLA.
i had the same problem and sent them a letter with the dates i got rid of the car and cashed the tax in they then dropped the fine as it is an automated system that hands out the fines so i say send a letter and wait for a reply
