A common cause of this type of problem is the temperature sensor for the fuel injection.
You dont say what model espace or if your engine management light is on,but failure of this sensor can often give rise to the symptoms you describe without illuminating the management light.
The sensor should cost around £20 and be straightforward to replace. It s worth replacing this before spending loads on getting the car diagnosed by a garage.
Hope this helps
is it a diesel?if so the glow plugs may need replacing,if its a petrol you may need to change the distributor cap and leads, cap gets condensation, and the leads crack and give the oddmiss fire, just something for u to check ok
We had that with a Renault Scenic. A couple of the glow plugs needed to be replaced.
get a service
auto choke is not working. Or what ever is in this cars engine system to enrich-en the gas until the engine is warm enough to properly vaporize the fuel. May need a good mechanic to fix.
Renault's are crap
the espace suffers from coolant temperature censor for the injection system, the temperature censor will be reading that the vehicle is running at warm temp, even when the car is cold, this is why it is difficult to start when its cold and runs lumpy till its warm.. you need to replace the coolant temperature censor for the injection system..if you take it to a Renault garage, should cost about £140 fitted.
scrap it while u can still drive it there
This is a problem in the cold-start system - something is failing to tell the computer that it is not, in fact, a nice warm day outside.

There's no choice but to fix it properly: so take it to one of Monsieur Renault's elves, or a fuel-injection/diesel specialist.
Have you thought about throwing 2 gals of petrol at it and a lighted match
if its petrol ,choke problem ,if its diesel its glow plugs
