Why on the motorway do people drive like morons when they see a police car?

Was on the motorway about 2 weeks ago, the police car was doing smack on 70mph. I moved to overtake but a car in front of me wouldn't get out of the fast lane. I wouldn't undertake with a police car next to me, but eventually the car pulled into the middle lane which i promptly passed. To my horror I saw the police lights go on and thought i was in trouble. but to my surprise (at common sence being shown by a police man) he pulled the driver who wouldn't move out of my way.

so he should. and people drive like morons without the police about.
what about the idiots who overtake you on a 30mph road only to be in front of you and behind a Que of other cars. they are the wost drivers. also the ones that come off the fast lane at 90 mph and cut right across the reservation only to turn off at the next junction nearly killing or causing a pile up .
oh well ! i could go on but this is your question.,
good luck :-)
Yeah right on! I hate those people who slam on the anchors whan they see a cop car. Why not just cruise by and drive normally and safely as you would do. I hope the cops made him cry for being such a fart hole!!

sorry, got a bit carried away.
People seem to go into panic-goody-two-shoes mode whenever they see a police car, because everyone knows it's not that the police are doing their job. oh no, they're out to get everyone! Why can't everyone just stick to the laws and the rules of the road normally, instead of when they just see a police car:
hint - if you're not overtaking, stay on the left!
ppl r afraid that ther gonna get pulld ova 4 goin a lil ova tha speed limit!they dnt know how 2 drive!
hehe..I don't know why it happens but it does.I overtook a police car at around 80 once..it was smooth and I didn't look like I was cacking my pants, they didn't bat an eyelid..not sure what happens to the static 70mph drivers, they must think the the police check how skillful they are at maintaining the speed limit.the blocking drver although within the limit was driving like a git.even though you overtook you did it in a sane manner !
Why where you overtaking a Police car doing 70mph it was doing the speed limit? .
Did you want to get a ticket?
The cop pulled over the right car. I can't stand it when people come to a halt whenever a cop is nearby. If they get scared that easily, they shouldn't be driving.
Dude, I live in Lithuania where the driving makes that in the UK look positively funereal in its reserve and consideration, even from @ssholes you get along the lines of some of the respondents answers. That said, you're right - people sh1te themselves and think that they actually have to drive somewhat below the speed limit when they see the CHiPs; there's a certain class of person that cannot think for themselves or do anything independently, it's the same 'awwww sir/miss, I know it' syndrome you used to get in school from to55ers who got RSI from holding their arms up too long wanting to be the first to answer the question (I guess now grown up).actually I used to do that sometimes :-(
You had the last laugh anyway.
Unless you got a calibrated speedo I guess plod was doing bang on 65, my cars show 75, and 77 at an actual 70 measured on several ocassions with digital stop watch over 1600 metres which is almost exactly a mile, and one showed 82.70 was 60.
At least on the motorway you can ease past at 1 mph or less faster.
1 moron plod flashed me for using the middle lane on a deserted M6 near Preston at 4 in the morning, All very well but bloody great chunks of tyre live on motorways and youcan see much further to the left than right with modern headlamps so middle lane is safer, you can see where you are swerving to the left but not right, and if in the left hand lane you cannot swerve left.
Morons
If the conditions are good and the traffic is running freeley, the police will not pull you over unless you are doing over 85mph, they are more likely to pull over anyone who is 'hoggining' a lane.
"I moved to overtake but a car in front of me wouldn't get out of the fast lane."

This sentence of your question says it all. He doesn't have to move out of your way. No law says people have to get out of the way of speeders. This might come as a surprise to you, but you aren't allowed to break the speed limit by gross amounts just because you are on a highway. There is no law dictating that the other car has to move out of your way.

Now if he was boxing you in or cutting you off to purposely stop you from passing him then that is illegal as well. It sounds to me like this story is made up or told from a one-sided perspective. It is also missing crucial details such as what the posted speed limit was or why.

I have a hard time believing a police officer would pull someone over for "not moving out of the way", especially given there is nothing illegal about it. Assuming he was going at least the speed limit, it sounds like you were the wrong one. If the officer did pull the other guy over it was probably for a different reason like aggressive driving or not using a signal or something.
Funny!
If you look in the mirror Mike you'll probably see one of the morons your talking about!
That is good news that the driver who wouldnt move out of the way got pulled over - lane hoggers.
